What Happens During Root Canal Treatment

Knowing what to expect takes most of the worry out of it. Here is how a typical treatment runs at our Irumbuliyur clinic.

1. Examination and X-ray

We confirm which tooth is affected, check how far the infection has spread, and talk you through the options before anything is decided.

2. Numbing the Tooth

Local anaesthetic is given and we make certain the area is completely numb before starting. You should feel pressure, not pain.

3. Reaching the Pulp

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to give access to the canals inside the root.

4. Cleaning and Shaping

The infected pulp is removed and each canal is cleaned, disinfected and shaped so it can be sealed properly.

5. Filling and Sealing

The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to stop bacteria getting back in.

6. Restoring the Tooth

The tooth is rebuilt with a permanent filling, and usually a crown on back teeth, so it can take normal chewing forces again.

Recovering After Your Treatment

Most people go back to work or school the same day. It is normal for the tooth to feel tender for two to three days, especially if it was badly infected beforehand, and ordinary over-the-counter painkillers are usually enough.

Until the tooth has its permanent filling or crown, chew on the other side and avoid anything hard or sticky on that tooth. Keep brushing and flossing as normal — a treated tooth still needs looking after.

Is a root canal painful?
This is the question we are asked most. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the pain of the infection itself, not the treatment. The tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic first, and most patients say the procedure feels similar to having a filling. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and usually settles with ordinary painkillers.
How many visits will I need?
Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two visits, depending on which tooth is involved and how many canals it has. Front teeth generally have a single canal and are quicker; molars have more canals and take longer. If there is significant infection, your dentist may place a medicated dressing and ask you to return.

Will I need a crown after my root canal?
Often, yes — particularly for back teeth. A treated tooth has had its inner pulp removed and can become brittle, and molars take the heaviest chewing forces. A crown covers and protects the tooth so it does not fracture. Your dentist will tell you whether your specific tooth needs one.
What happens if I do not treat an infected tooth?
An infected pulp does not heal on its own. Left untreated, the infection can spread into the bone around the root and form an abscess, which may cause swelling, severe pain and, in some cases, serious complications. The tooth is also far more likely to be lost. Treating it early is almost always simpler and less expensive.
Is root canal treatment better than removing the tooth?
