How Restorative Treatment Works

Timescales vary considerably — a filling is one visit, an implant runs over several months while the bone heals.

1. Assessment

We examine the tooth or the gap, take X-rays to check the bone and roots, and establish what is realistically possible.

2. Discussing Options

Each suitable option is explained with its advantages, drawbacks, likely lifespan and cost, so you can weigh them properly.

3. Preparing the Tooth

Decay or failed old restorations are removed and the tooth is shaped, all under local anaesthetic.

4. Impressions or Scan

An accurate record of the tooth and your bite is taken so the laboratory can make a restoration that fits precisely.

5. Temporary Restoration

Where a laboratory stage is involved, a temporary keeps the tooth protected and usable while you wait.

6. Fitting and Adjustment

The final restoration is fitted, the bite is checked and adjusted, and it is cemented or secured in place.

Caring for Restored Teeth

Crowns, bridges and implants still need daily cleaning. The margin where a crown meets the tooth, and the area beneath a bridge, are the places problems begin — a crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath it certainly can.

Implants do not decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed and recede if plaque is left, which is the most common reason an implant is eventually lost. Cleaning around an implant is not optional.

Give a new restoration a little care at first: avoid very hard or sticky food on that side for the first day or two, and be careful with a temporary crown, which is deliberately weakly cemented so it can be removed.

Come back if the bite feels high or uneven once the numbness wears off, if there is sensitivity that does not settle within a week or two, or if anything feels loose. These are quick to adjust early and troublesome if left.

Implant or bridge — which should I choose?
An implant replaces the root as well as the crown, does not involve cutting down the neighbouring teeth, and helps preserve the bone in that area. A bridge is quicker and usually less expensive, but requires the adjacent teeth to be prepared, which is irreversible. If those neighbouring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge may be the sensible choice; if they are healthy and untouched, an implant usually is.
How long do dental implants last?
A well-placed and well-maintained implant can last many years, often decades. Longevity depends heavily on cleaning around it, on gum health, and on not smoking. The crown attached to the implant may need replacing sooner than the implant itself.
Is getting an implant painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and most patients report less discomfort than they expected — commonly comparable to an extraction. There is usually some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards, manageable with ordinary painkillers.
How long does implant treatment take overall?
Usually several months from placement to final crown, because the implant needs time to integrate with the bone before it can carry a chewing load. Rushing that stage risks failure. Your dentist will set out the timeline for your case, including whether a temporary is needed in the meantime.
How long does a crown last?
Many crowns last well over ten years, and often considerably longer. What usually fails is not the crown but the tooth beneath it, through decay at the margin or fracture, which is why cleaning that junction thoroughly matters so much.
Are tooth-coloured fillings as good as metal ones?
For most everyday cavities, yes. Composite bonds to the tooth, needs less healthy tooth removed to hold it in place, and is far less visible. Very large restorations in back teeth under heavy chewing forces may be better served by an onlay or crown, and your dentist will advise where that applies.
What happens if I just leave a missing tooth?
Neighbouring teeth tend to tilt into the space and the tooth opposing the gap over-erupts, which alters your bite and can make later restoration more complicated and costly. The jawbone in that area also gradually resorbs once the root is gone. There are situations where leaving a gap is reasonable — a missing back molar, for instance — and we will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
