Teeth Whitening

Lighter Teeth, Without Wrecking the Enamel

Professional whitening lightens the natural tooth by breaking down staining that has built up inside the enamel and the dentine beneath it. It does not coat, paint or resurface anything — which is why, done properly, it is one of the least invasive cosmetic treatments available. Nothing is removed from the tooth.

The word "properly" is doing real work in that sentence. Whitening an unhealthy mouth is where problems come from. Bleach reaching a cavity, an exposed root or an inflamed gum causes pain and can make an existing problem worse. That is why we examine first, every time, and treat anything that needs treating before whitening starts.

It is also worth knowing what whitening cannot do. It only works on natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers and existing white fillings will not change shade, so if any of those are visible when you smile, they may need replacing afterwards to match. We will point out which of your restorations this affects before you decide.

Signs

What Whitening Works Well On

Tea and coffee staining

The most common reason people ask. These stains sit in the enamel surface and respond well.

Tobacco staining

Responds, though it returns faster if the habit continues.

Age-related yellowing

Enamel thins over the years and the darker dentine beneath shows through more. Whitening lifts this.

General dullness

Teeth that have simply lost brightness rather than having any specific problem.

Before a specific event

A wedding or a photograph is a perfectly good reason. Allow enough time — this is not a same-week decision if restorations will need matching.

Uneven shade after other work

Sometimes used to bring natural teeth up to the shade of a planned crown or veneer rather than the other way round.

Causes

Why Teeth Darken

Food and drink

Tea, coffee, red wine, cola and strongly coloured curries all deposit pigment into the enamel over years.

Tobacco

Both smoking and chewing tobacco stain heavily, and chewing tobacco carries far more serious risks than discolouration.

Age

Enamel gradually thins and the yellower dentine underneath becomes more visible. This is normal, not neglect.

Plaque and tartar

Build-up makes teeth look dull and darker. Some of what people think needs whitening simply needs cleaning.

Certain medicines

Some antibiotics taken while teeth were forming cause intrinsic discolouration, which responds differently and less predictably.

A single dark tooth

Usually a tooth whose nerve has died, often after an old injury. That needs diagnosing, not bleaching — it may need root canal treatment.

The Procedure

How Professional Whitening Works

The sequence matters more than the product. Skipping the first two steps is what causes the horror stories.

1. Examination

We check for decay, cracks, exposed roots and gum inflammation. Anything found is treated before whitening.

2. Cleaning first

Whitening over plaque and tartar gives a patchy result. A professional clean often makes a visible difference on its own.

3. Recording the starting shade

So the change is measured rather than remembered, and so restorations can be matched later if needed.

4. Protecting the gums

The soft tissues are isolated before any whitening agent is applied.

5. The whitening

Applied under supervision at a concentration and duration suited to your teeth and your sensitivity.

6. Review

We check the result once it has stabilised and discuss whether any visible restorations now need matching.

Benefits

Why Have It Done Professionally

Your mouth is checked first

The single biggest safety difference between supervised whitening and a kit bought online.

Concentration suited to you

Adjusted for your enamel and your sensitivity rather than a one-size product.

Gums are protected

Isolation prevents the chemical burns that cause most whitening complaints.

Even result

Applied properly across the whole visible surface rather than wherever a tray happens to sit.

Restorations accounted for

You are told in advance which crowns or fillings will not change, instead of discovering it afterwards.

Someone to call

If sensitivity flares, there is a dentist who knows what was used and at what strength.

Technology

How We Keep It Comfortable

Shade recording

A defined starting point so the result is objective rather than a matter of memory.

Gum isolation

The soft tissue is protected before anything is applied.

Sensitivity management

Concentration and contact time are adjusted, and desensitising measures used where teeth are prone to it.

Cost

What Determines the Cost

Whitening is elective treatment, so you should know the full picture before starting:

The method used

In-clinic treatment and dentist-supervised home kits are priced differently and suit different people.

How many sessions

Heavier staining may need more than one visit to reach the shade you want.

Cleaning beforehand

If scaling is needed first, that is a separate item and we will say so up front.

Treating anything found

Decay or gum problems identified at the examination must be dealt with before whitening.

Matching restorations

If a visible crown or filling needs replacing to match the new shade, that is an additional cost — quoted separately, before you commit.

You get an itemised estimate covering all of the above before treatment starts, including any restoration matching, so the price cannot creep. Call +91 9585 360 320.

Deciding

Whitening, Cleaning, Bonding or Veneers?

Not every complaint about tooth colour is a whitening problem. Choosing the wrong one is how people end up spending far more than they needed to.

Professional cleaning

Where it fits: If the dullness is surface build-up — tartar, plaque, staining sitting on the outside — a scale and polish removes it. It is the cheapest option and sometimes it is the whole answer.

The trade-off: It will not change the underlying shade of the tooth. If your teeth are genuinely yellow rather than coated, cleaning alone will disappoint you.

Whitening

Where it fits: Right for general yellowing, age-related darkening and staining from tea, coffee or tobacco. Nothing is removed from the tooth, which makes it the least invasive cosmetic option available.

The trade-off: Only works on natural tooth structure. Crowns, veneers and white fillings will not change. Results fade over six months to two years and need topping up.

Composite bonding

Where it fits: Better when the issue is shape as well as colour — a chip, a small gap, an uneven edge. Done in a single visit, costs less than veneers, and removes little or no enamel.

The trade-off: Picks up stain over time and is more prone to chipping than porcelain. Not the right tool for whitening a whole arch.

Porcelain veneers

Where it fits: The answer for intrinsic discolouration that whitening cannot shift — for example staining from certain antibiotics taken while the teeth were forming — or where shape and colour both need changing substantially.

The trade-off: Requires permanent removal of a thin layer of enamel, so the tooth will always need a covering afterwards. Costs the most. Should be the last option considered, not the first.

We would rather do the smallest thing that gets you the result. If a clean and a whitening session will get you most of the way there, we will say so before anyone mentions veneers.

Aftercare

Keeping the Result

Some sensitivity to cold during and shortly after whitening is common and normally settles within a few days. Tell us if it is troubling you — there are straightforward ways to manage it.

The first day or two is when teeth pick up stain most readily. Going easy on tea, coffee, red wine, cola and heavily coloured food during that window makes a real difference to how long the result lasts.

After that, ordinary care applies: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between the teeth, and rinse with water after staining drinks rather than letting them sit. Cutting down on tobacco does more for the result than anything else.

Whitening is not permanent. Depending on your diet and habits, expect somewhere between six months and two years before you notice it fading. Occasional top-ups maintain it rather than starting over.

Questions

Teeth Whitening Questions, Answered

Is teeth whitening safe for enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening does not damage enamel. Nothing is removed from the tooth — the process breaks down staining within it. The risks come from unsupervised high-strength products and from whitening teeth that have untreated decay or exposed roots, which is exactly why we examine first.
How long do the results last?
Typically somewhere between six months and two years, depending largely on diet and whether you smoke. Tea, coffee and tobacco are the main culprits. Occasional top-ups maintain the result rather than repeating the whole treatment.
Will my crowns and fillings whiten too?
No, crowns and fillings do not whiten. Whitening only lightens natural tooth structure. Existing crowns, veneers and composite fillings keep their current shade, so if they are visible when you smile they may need replacing afterwards to match. We identify which of your restorations this affects before you start.
Does whitening hurt?
Whitening should not hurt. Sensitivity to cold during and shortly after treatment is common and usually settles within a few days. If your teeth are already sensitive, tell us — the concentration and contact time can be adjusted.
Are shop-bought whitening kits worth it?
Shop-bought whitening kits are generally weaker, and more importantly nobody has checked your mouth first. The genuine risks are bleaching over an undiagnosed cavity or exposed root, and burning the gums with a tray that does not fit. If you do use one, have a check-up first.
Can I whiten my teeth while pregnant?
Whitening is elective treatment, so the usual advice during pregnancy is simply to wait. There is no urgency to it, and postponing avoids the question entirely. Always tell us if you are or might be pregnant.
Why is one of my teeth darker than the rest?
A single dark tooth usually means the nerve inside it has died, often years after an injury. That is a diagnosis, not a cosmetic issue — it may need root canal treatment, and there are specific techniques for lightening a tooth in that situation. Have it looked at rather than bleaching over it.
Can whitening fix all discolouration?
No, whitening cannot fix every kind of discolouration. Surface and age-related staining respond well. Intrinsic discolouration — for example from certain antibiotics taken while the teeth were forming — responds far less predictably, and veneers or bonding may be the better route. We will tell you honestly which category yours falls into.
How white will my teeth actually get?
How white your teeth become depends on your starting shade and the type of staining, and no honest dentist can promise a specific outcome in advance. We record your starting shade so the change is measurable, and we will give you a realistic expectation before you decide.
What does teeth whitening cost?
Teeth whitening cost depends on the method, how many sessions are needed, whether cleaning is required first, and whether any visible restorations will need matching afterwards. You get an itemised written estimate covering all of it before treatment begins.

If your teeth react to cold, read tooth sensitivity first.
