The Cheapest Dentistry Is the Kind You Never Need
Almost every expensive dental problem started as a cheap one. Decay begins as a soft spot that can be remineralised. Gum disease begins as bleeding that reverses with proper cleaning. Left alone, the first becomes a filling and then a root canal; the second becomes bone loss and lost teeth.
Preventive dentistry is the work of catching things at that first stage — and of making sure fewer of them start at all. It is unglamorous and it is by far the best value dentistry available.
At our Irumbuliyur clinic that means regular examinations, professional cleaning, protection for the teeth most at risk, and honest coaching on the parts of your routine that are not quite working. We would far rather see you twice a year for twenty years than once for something serious.
Preventive Treatments We Offer
Which of these you need depends on your own risk, which we assess rather than assume.
Routine Examinations
A thorough check of teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues to find problems while they are still small and simple.
Scaling and Polishing
Professional removal of hardened plaque from above and below the gum line, where brushing cannot reach.
Gum Disease Screening
Measurement and monitoring of gum health, because gum disease is painless until it is advanced and is the leading cause of adult tooth loss.
Fluoride Treatment
Topical fluoride to strengthen enamel and help reverse very early decay, for adults at higher risk as well as children.
Fissure Sealants
Protective coating for the deep grooves of back teeth, the single most decay-prone surface in the mouth.
Night Guards
A custom guard to protect against the tooth wear, fractures and jaw ache caused by night-time grinding.
Why Patients Choose Dental Leaf for Preventive Care
Risk Assessed Individually
Recall intervals and preventive treatment are based on your own risk, not a standard six-month rule applied to everyone.
We Show You What We See
It is far easier to change a brushing habit when you can see the area that is being missed.
Practical Advice, Not Lectures
Small changes you will actually keep up beat an ideal routine you abandon in a fortnight.
Early Intervention
We would rather monitor a small area and treat it if it progresses than drill it the moment we see it.
Soft Tissue Screening
A routine check of the mouth’s soft tissues at every examination. It takes moments and can matter enormously.
Care for Every Age
Preventive needs change from childhood to later life, and so does the advice we give.
What a Preventive Appointment Involves
A typical preventive visit combines assessment, cleaning and advice.
1. Reviewing Your History
Medical history, medication and lifestyle all affect dental risk. Dry mouth from medication, for instance, raises decay risk considerably.
2. Examining Teeth and Gums
Every tooth is checked and gum health is measured, so change can be tracked against previous visits.
3. Soft Tissue Check
A screening look at the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat as a routine part of every examination.
4. Professional Cleaning
Hardened deposits are removed from above and below the gum line and the teeth are polished.
5. Targeted Protection
Fluoride, sealants or a night guard where they are indicated for your particular risk.
6. A Plan You Can Follow
Specific advice on the areas being missed, and an interval for your next visit based on your risk.
Prevention at Home
Brush twice a day for two full minutes with fluoride toothpaste, and spit rather than rinse afterwards so the fluoride stays working on the teeth. Two minutes is longer than it feels — most people brush for well under one.
Clean between your teeth every day. Around a third of each tooth surface sits between the teeth where a brush cannot reach, and that is where a large share of decay and gum disease begins. Floss or interdental brushes both work; the one you will actually use is the right one.
Frequency of sugar matters more than quantity. Every sugar exposure produces an acid attack lasting up to an hour, so grazing all day is far worse for your teeth than the same amount eaten at mealtimes.
If you smoke, it is worth knowing that it both raises your risk of gum disease and masks the warning sign, because it reduces the bleeding that would otherwise alert you. Stopping is the single most effective thing you can do for your gums.
